Boric acid and borate are restricted components in the 2015 version of the Safety Technical Specifications for Cosmetics. The reason for limiting the use of components is that long-term intake of boric acid and borate may lead to chronic poisoning of human body. In addition, boric acid will inhibit digestive enzymes, reduce appetite, and cause indigestion, thus impeding the absorption of nutrients by the human body. If borate is absorbed by human body, the symptoms are nausea and diarrhea, which may induce acute poisoning, coma, renal failure and even death. Therefore, the content of boric acid and borate in cosmetics is also strictly limited.
